This bookcase is designed to be built like the original -- with a combination of machinery and handwork.
It's a good example of craftsman or mission-style furniture of the early 1900's. It has sturdy mortise and through tenon construction, square pegs, and shop-made door pulls -- just like the originals.
All the shelves are adjustable.
CONSTRUCTION. We made our Craftsman Bookcase out of solid cherry and cherry plywood. (Note: Some of the original craftsman-style furniture was made of cherry, but most was built from quartersawn white oak.) The overall dimensions are 59" high x 48" wide x 14" deep.
This project was originally published in Woodsmith No. 90.
